Ms Jeremy said “Today marks an auspicious moment, a turning point for the future of the southern forests. What we are launching today is more than a report. It is an invitation to imagine a different future for these landscapes: one that values culture, nature, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the joy of time spent in wild places over the broken economics of turning forests into woodchips.”

“As the Great Koala National Park proposal made clear, incremental gains are no longer enough. Small wins will not meet the scale of a rapidly warming climate, accelerating land clearing, megafires, and species spiralling toward extinction. It is time to go bold or go home” she said.

“This report sets out a compelling, evidence‑based case for ending native forest logging across the public forests of south‑eastern NSW and reclassifying approximately 365,000 hectares of State Forest into permanent Protected Areas.

“Today is not about saying “our way or the highway.” Today is about beginning a conversation, a genuine, open‑ended discussion about what the future of these forests should be” said Ms Jeremy.

“This proposal is a starting point, a framework for imagining what is possible when we choose protection over depletion, and when we choose to act at the scale the moment demands.”

“The Great Southern Forest is a gift, a living system of immense cultural, ecological, and economic value. And today, we take the first step toward ensuring that gift endures” she concluded.

Joslyn van der Moolen, Convenor of NPA’s Eurobodalla Branch, said the event is an exciting opportunity to bring together people from across the region to hear about the ecological, cultural, recreational and economic importance of the Great Southern Forest “The strong turnout today demonstrates growing community and local business support in securing a long-term future for the region’s forests,” said Ms Joslyn van der Moolen.

“This proposal provides an opportunity to work with stakeholders on increasing their engagement with our public forests. We look forward to continuing conversations with communities, Traditional Owners, local tourism, and primary industry local business, recreation groups, local councils and government in the months ahead.”

Greens MP, Solicitor and spokesperson for the environment Sue Higginson said “It’s exhilarating to see the decades of work by hundreds and thousands of dedicated experts and community members come together in this Great Southern Forests National Park Proposal. This is a moment of hope and vision for communities from the Illawarra to Eden and will benefit the entire Country. I haven’t seen something this positive for nature since the plan for the Great Koala National Park was first revealed some 16 years ago,”

“Industrial scale logging of our public forests on the NSW South Coast is coming to a rapid end. Our high value timber products come from plantations, not our native forests. The millions of public dollars currently being spent to prop up the failing native forest logging industry can not be justified any longer. It should be redirected, and invested in the future of nature protection and public good.”

“The Great Southern Forest proposal is a vital step in reversing species decline and safeguarding our region’s biodiversity.” NPA Far South Coast Branch President, David Gallan stated.

“The proposal would protect more than 10,000 hectares of threatened ecological communities, support 12 endemic and 4 critically endangered flora species, and protect 61 threatened animal species, including the Yellow-bellied Glider, Swift Parrot, Southern Greater Glider, Spotted-tailed Quoll and Southern Brown Bandicoot.

“We need proper protection for our native forests now, more than ever. Every Australian has a responsibility to conserve our unique natural heritage.” Mr. Gallan concluded.

The launch comes amid growing momentum across New South Wales and internationally to protect and restore nature, including commitments to conserve at least 30 per cent of land and sea by 2030.

12 June 2026 – In a welcome move for the local government sector, the NSW Government has announced that from 1 July 2027, it will take over ownership and responsibility of the Rural Fire Service’s mobile assets – commonly referred to as the “Red Fleet”.

Mayor Darcy Byrne, President of Local Government NSW said the move would come as a great relief to local councils across NSW.

“For the last 30 years, legislation has said that these assets are owned by councils. Yet councils had no say in the acquisition, usage and disposal of these assets; these were all decisions of the Rural Fire Service” said Mayor Byrne.

Despite this, councils have been required to record these assets in their financial statements and absorb the depreciation expense for these assets, as well as the costs of inspecting and recording these assets in their accounts. Today’s announcement means that once the transfer takes place next year, councils will no longer carry this impost.

“Today’s reform will be particularly felt in smaller rural and regional areas where the vesting of Red Fleet assets has had a huge impact as these communities often have a proportionally larger RFS presence. These councils were carrying a heavy financial burden by being forced to record them on their books.”

“This is a major win for local government and comes after years of persistent advocacy by LGNSW and from our individual councils”.

Most recently, LGNSW made strong representations to an inquiry conducted by the NSW Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee whose final report recommended that legal ownership of the fleet should be transferred to the RFS as a state agency.

“We thank the members of that Committee for recognising this urgent need and we are pleased that the State Government has acted so decisively on this key recommendation to transfer ownership.”

“Councils strongly support the work of the RFS and recognise that it is a world leading firefighting service. We look forward to working with the State Government over the next 12 months to ensure a successful transition, including appropriate consideration of maintenance contracts.”
