Youth gather for Batemans Bay Gatho

By John Longhurst

Over 20 young people braved the icy conditions last Sunday to catch up and connect at the first ‘Local Gatho’, held under the bridge over the Clyde River.

Facilitator and organiser Sofia Keady was delighted with the positive response.

“While the trial HSC meant many Year 12 students were busy studying, we still had a great turnout—especially considering the weather,” Sofia said.

The ‘Local Gatho’ is run by a committee of young people and aims to create a regular space for connection. “Just as we have the monthly community picnic for all residents on the last Sunday of the month, the ‘Gatho’ is designed for 15–25 year olds and will be held on the second Sunday of each month,” Sofia explained.

This first event featured live music, a shared meal, art therapy with well-known local artist Ruth Halverson, and a visit from Headspace Batemans Bay. The committee also welcomed Megan Garrett from Women in Business South Coast and The Personnel Group, Jane Edwards President of Batemans Bay Business and Tourism Chamber along with Jay Prothero from Breathe with Jay.

Twenty-three-year-old Lily Conybeare from Batemans Bay enjoyed the activities, especially the art therapy. “It’s a great idea and such a good icebreaker to meet other young people,” she said.

The next ‘Local Gatho’ will be held on Sunday, 14 September.
