Repair work on Brown Mountain sites moves forward
The next stage of critical repairs will begin this month on two more landslip sites on Brown Mountain, as progress continues to fix damage from heavy rain events.
Transport for NSW Regional Director South, Cassandra Ffrench, said extensive repairs had already been carried out at three landslip sites along the Snowy Mountains Highway with the next two on Brown Mountain set to be finished before the year’s end.
“A contract has been awarded to RIX Asset Management to carry out the work, which will begin on Monday 9 September at a site located about two and a half kilometres west of the Brown Mountain Power Station, before moving to the second site about a kilometre further west,” Ms Ffrench said.
The $1.9 million program of work has been funded through the Australian and State Government’s Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, and will include removing loose soil and rocks, installing soil nails then adding mesh and sprayed concrete, also known as “shotcrete”.
Ms Ffrench said natural disasters have had a devastating impact on travel through Brown Mountain and understands the inconvenience this has caused motorists.
“These projects take time, and crews are making significant progress to work through each area and restore the road to its pre-disaster condition,” Ms Ffrench said.
“We thank the community for their patience while we carry out this important repair work that is necessary to get the Snowy Mountains Highway back open to its full capacity.”
Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions including a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h single lane closure, traffic signals and barriers to separate vehicles from the work area.
When work starts at the first site, there will be four natural disaster recovery sites under traffic control on Snowy Mountains Highway at Brown Mountain for a three-week period.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, allow five minutes additional travel time and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

By starting the new site at this time, Transport aims to complete work at seven of the nine landslip damage sites before the end of the calendar year.
