$2.5 million upgrade to ease congestion and boost safety on Princes Highway near Moruya
Work to ease traffic and improve safety on Princes Highway near Moruya starts next week
The NSW Government is spending $2.5 million on upgrades between Malabar Drive and Shelley Road as part of the Princes Highway Corridor safety and efficiency upgrades program.
Starting Tuesday 2 September, work will begin to extend the northbound overtaking lane by about 550 metres just south of Malabar Drive. This will help improve traffic flow by increasing capacity on this section of the highway and allow motorists safely pass slower vehicles like trucks and caravans.
The upgrades include:
- widening the road and shoulders,
- fixing the road surface,
- improving drainage,
- putting in flexible steel barriers along the roadside, and
- restoring the centreline.
There will also be improvements at the Princes Highway and Malabar Drive intersection, giving extra space for cars turning left off the highway. The right turn lane into Malabar Drive will stay the same.
This work is part of a $60 million program of safety and efficiency upgrades on the Princes Highway between Sussex Inlet Road and Moruya being delivered by the NSW Labor Government.
Work will run weekdays from 6am to 6pm from Tuesday, 2 September 2025, and is expected to take about three months, weather permitting.
Single lane closures and traffic controls will be in place to keep things moving. Thanks to the community for their patience during this work.
Member for Bega Dr Michael Holland said “I know how important this stretch of highway is for our community. These upgrades will mean safer trips for locals and visitors, and less frustration on the road.
“This $2.5 million investment will make a real difference – easing congestion, improving safety, and supporting the everyday lives of families, workers, and tourists across the Eurobodalla.
“I thank the community for their patience while the work is carried out, and I look forward to seeing the benefits of these improvements for years to come.”

Transport for NSW says “We are extending the existing northbound overtaking lane on the highway by around 550 metres south of Malabar Drive, as well as upgrading the intersection at Malabar Drive to ensure it aligns with current road design standards.
We are also widening the road shoulders, which will provide additional space for left-turning vehicles to safely exit the Princes Highway into Malabar Drive.
Work also includes:
- road widening to accommodate the additional overtaking lane and widened shoulders
- road surface and drainage improvements
- installing roadside flexible steel rail barriers
- reinstating the existing one-metre-wide centreline.
What are the benefits of these improvements?
The upgrades will increase safety, efficiency and traffic flow, providing road users with a smoother, safer journey along the Princes Highway.
Overtaking lane extension
Extending the overtaking lane will help improve traffic flow by increasing capacity on this section of the highway. It will also provide a safe option for motorists to pass slower vehicles, such as heavy vehicles and vehicles towing caravans.
Shoulder widening
Road shoulders serve multiple purposes, including providing a space for vehicles to recover or avoid hazards and providing a safe area for broken-down vehicles to stop. They also provide additional space on approach to intersections to allow left-turning vehicles to safely exit the highway.
Roadside flexible safety barriers
Flexible steel rail barriers along the roadside help redirect vehicles back into their lane, preventing crashes with roadside hazards. They are designed to absorb impact forces, lowering the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a crash.
Transport for NSW said “We’ll be working on the Princes Highway at Moruya, between Shelley Road and Malabar Drive, between 6am and 6pm weekdays starting Tuesday 2 September 2025. From 20 September, work will also be carried out on Saturdays between 7am and 6pm (excluding school and public holiday weekend) for up to three months, weather permitting.
Single lane closures, a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h and stop/slow traffic control will be in place while work is under way to ensure the safety of road users and workers.
Motorists are advised to allow up to five minutes’ additional travel time, drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.
As this location is a high traffic area, Transport for NSW will ensure work is carried out to minimise impacts to traffic and the community, particularly residents living along the project length and on Malabar Drive.
Transport thanks the community for their patience during this time.
