On Tuesday 5th August, Moruya Library celebrated World Breastfeeding Week with a warm and welcoming morning tea in collaboration with the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) Eurobodalla Group.

Guests were treated to a delicious spread provided by CWA Moruya, featuring an assortment of home-baked goodies, including the much-loved “boobie cupcakes.”

The event brought together local families and a wide range of support services, including Eurobodalla Shire Council Children’s Services, Tresillian, The Family Place, Campbell Page, and local Child and Family Health and Maternity services.

Mums enjoyed a relaxed and engaging atmosphere with fun activities like Breastfeeding Bingo and True or False board games, while also learning about valuable local resources, including the ABA’s breastfeeding support group, breast pump hire, and new parenting and wellbeing programs, such as Tresillian’s “Getting to Know You” parenting course and ESC Children’s Services’ “Embracing Babies” program.

ESC’s Sustainability Officer, Allana Haines, brought along an engaging cloth nappy display, sharing practical and eco-friendly parenting tips with interested families.

“It was lovely to get to know more of the people involved in supporting the young families in our area, and was great to offer a space for mums and babies to connect with each other and with these supports,” said Rachel Blaas from Moruya Library.

Across the globe, World Breastfeeding Week is championed by WHO, UNICEF, and countless partners to shine a light on breastfeeding as a powerful foundation for lifelong health, development, and equity. This year’s theme, “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” reminds us that breastfeeding isn’t just a personal journey – it’s a shared responsibility. Mothers and babies need support at every step – from hospitals and health workers to families, employers, and local communities, like those gathered in Moruya.

“Here in Eurobodalla, we’re proud to be part of a global movement supporting families,” said Michelle Hamrosi, ABA Eurobodalla Group Leader. “With the right information, skilled guidance, and a supportive community around them, parents are empowered to reach their breastfeeding goals—and feel confident every step of the way.”

Investing in breastfeeding is not only the right thing to do – it’s smart public health. It reduces healthcare costs, improves cognitive and emotional outcomes, strengthens resilience, and supports environmental sustainability by reducing reliance on formula production and packaging.

This year’s celebration at Moruya Library was a strong reminder that it truly does take a village to support breastfeeding families – and that through care, connection, and collaboration, we can build a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
