Batemans Bay NSW SES unit rises from the ashes for community open day Saturday 6 June

Rising from the ashes of the Black Summer bushfires, the NSW State Emergency Service Batemans Bay Unit is back with a vengeance, opening the doors of its new home to the community this weekend.

Locals are invited to attend a family friendly Open Day on Saturday 6 June from 10am to 2pm at the new Emergency Services Precinct, 3 Sawmill Road Surf Beach, home to both the NSW SES Batemans Bay Unit and NSW Rural Fire Service Surf Beach Brigade.

NSW SES Batemans Bay Unit Commander Kevin Shepherd said the Unit was excited to finally welcome the community into its new home.

“We’ve had many people ask when they can come and see the new building, so we are thrilled to finally open the doors,” Mr Shepherd said.

“This facility is something our members are incredibly proud of. It gives our volunteers the space, equipment and resources they need to train, prepare and respond when the community needs us most.

“The Open Day will be a fantastic chance for families to meet their local volunteers, have a look around and learn more about staying safe in emergencies.”

The event will give the community a rare behind the scenes look inside the new $5.9 million purpose-built facility.

Visitors can tour the modern facility, meet local emergency service volunteers, inspect rescue trucks and appliances, enjoy interactive displays, learn how to prepare for emergencies and grab a barbecue lunch.

The precinct has been designed to strengthen emergency response across the Eurobodalla, bringing local SES and RFS volunteers together under one roof to improve training, planning and coordination during floods, storms, bushfires and other emergencies.

Acting South Eastern Zone Commander Barry Griffiths said the new precinct was a major boost for emergency response on the South Coast.

“After losing their former headquarters in the Black Summer fires, it is fantastic to see the Batemans Bay Unit operating from a modern, fit-for-purpose facility that will support emergency response for many years to come.

“We encourage the whole community to come along, meet their local emergency service members and see firsthand the incredible capability based right here in Surf Beach.”

Special parking arrangements will be in place on the day, with no public parking available on site. Shuttle transport will operate from designated parking areas.
