100 Years Ago from the Moruya Examiner

The Bateman’s Bay school, we believe, is to be furnished with dual furniture throughout, and a stove for the infants’ class room. The building has been remodelled and now presents an up-to-date appearance. Teacher C. Carter has created a lively interest in school matters generally.
Aladin lamps are fast becoming the most popular means of illuminating private houses in Moruya, as since their introduction, the local agent, Mr. A. McIntosh, has disposed of over 50. Their value is proven by the fact that many of the purchasers, after a reasonable trial, are ordering a second and even a third of these cheap lamps.
A chance to obtain good grazing and cultivation land will be made available on 10th October, when H. J. Thomson will offer 77 acres at Dwyer’s Creek. This property which has a permanent supply of water, has been in the hands of the Fry family for many years, and is now being sold in order to wind up the estate of Thomas Fry (deceased).
The new addition to the Bateman’s Bay local hall has nearly been completed. The Hall will then present a more up-to-date appearance.
The monthly meeting of the Hospital Committee took place in the Shire Hall on 17th September. President Flood informed the meeting re filling the vacancy on the committee, Messrs. de Saxe and A. Louttit being the next on the list, had been interviewed with the result that Mr. Louttit was willing to accept; The Matron’s report was as follows: – Patients remaining in Hospital on 31st July, nil; admitted since last report 6 males, 2 females; discharged since last report, recovered 3 males, 1 female, died 1 male; remaining in Hospital on August 31st, 2 males, 1 female.
Donations in kind received: – Mrs. Stephens, fruit, vegetables and old linen; Mrs. Patrech, lobsters; Mrs. Simpson (Nelligen) case oranges; Mrs. Love, eggs; Mrs. E. Davis, eggs; Mrs. Crandell, eggs; Miss R. Donovan, biscuits and eggs; Miss K. Donovan, fish; Mrs. G, Constable, cheese. The committee consider that the matter of enlarging the men’s ward calls for immediate consideration, as, under present circumstances, three beds only for men do not provide for any emergencies that may arise at any time.
The generous offer of the Caledonian Society to devote the proceeds of one of its night’s socials to the Hospital fund was accepted with thanks.
Public Meeting. All those interested in forming a Swimming Club and erecting Bathing Sheds are kindly requested to attend a meeting in the Shire Hall on Tuesday, 6 Oct., at 7.30 p.m. – K. FOWLER, Promoter.
