Heritage Award winners will speak at Narooma meeting

Guest speakers at this Sunday’s (16 March) Narooma Historical Society meeting will be the creative duo of Michelle Garcia and Lynne Thomas of Narooma Public School, winners of the 2024 Fergus Thomson OAM Heritage Award.
Their winning entry, a song and film clip called Country Comes First, was born from the school’s collaborative programme ‘Music and Creative Culture’, which integrates local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, languages, and music.
They will also talk about their next project under the Music and Creative Culture programme. Everyone is invited.
Ms Garcia is the school’s Music Teacher and Ms Thomas its Aboriginal Education Officer.
“The kids absolutely love learning through song, games and telling stories,” Ms Garcia said. “This programme combines music, local Aboriginal dance, dhurga language, art, history and society all in an engaging environment.”
The Historical Society meets at 2pm this Sunday in the School of Arts’ Studios (red cottage behind the Kinema and BP). Afternoon tea will be provided.
