We have received some samples of swede turnips grown by Mr. John Toms on his property at Wagonga. Although they are not as heavy as those grown by Mr. T. Davis, of Coila, they measure 2ft. 2in. in circumference, and are of excellent flavor and texture.

Nelligen. (From our Correspondent.) The death is announced at his residence, Nelligen, of Mr. J. A. Dayball on 23rd June, at the age of 69 years, after a long illness. Born at Sydney, he removed with his parents at an early age to Araluen district. There he married Miss Fensom and shortly afterwards removed to the Clyde River where he has resided for the past 45 years. The issue of this marriage was 11 children, 7 sons and 4 daughters, 1 son dying in infancy. Three sons enlisted and served in Egypt and France, one being killed in France. Two sons and a daughter died within the last few years. The deceased leaves a widow, three sons (married), three daughters (one married), and 12 grandchildren to mourn their loss. …

On Sunday last at 2 a.m. Mr. J. Neate’s Steam Packet Hotel was completely destroyed by fire. The fire was first seen by Mr. Howe, a lodger, who lost no time in awakening the remaining inmates. The fire had considerable hold on the one story portion of the building, and it was with difficulty that many of the boarders were got out. Several of them had to make their exit through the windows. Some of the contents of the lower portion of the two-story part of the building were saved. The hotel was a wooden building of about 28 rooms.

Deep sympathy is expressed for Mr. and Mrs. Neate, who have lost practically everything, even their own personal belongings, jewels, keepsakes, etc. The building and contents were only partly covered by insurance.
